Keyhole Garden Sustainable Agriculture Project
Date: 1395 / 2016
Location: SRBIAU, Tehran, Iran
Description:
During my university studies in Plant Protection Engineering, I participated in the Keyhole Garden project, aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture. We constructed a large circular stone planter with a central hole, filling it with paper scraps, tea waste, compost, and other organic materials. Over the course of a year, we transformed a hot and arid area into a thriving garden with a diverse array of fresh produce.
In addition to cultivating vegetables, fruits, and herbs with minimal water, we emphasized environmental sustainability by using recycled materials wherever possible. Wooden signage was made from recycled crate pallets and painted with plastic paint, while metal signs were finished with oil-based paint. The project also included small structures like display panels and a gazebo for shade, offering both functional and creative design experiences.
This initiative was located next to the university greenhouse and continues to serve as an important research and educational center for agricultural students.
